Introduction:
The Aga Khan University – Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research (AKU-CRM) is dedicated to exploring the potential of stem cells and tissue regeneration to develop novel therapies for major diseases. The Centre has been working in partnership with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) – an internationally renowned Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research in developing its research, training, and education program.
AKU-CRM is inviting applications from outstanding and ambitious candidates for the position of Senior Research Assistant under the AKU-URC funded project (Ref No.222038: titled “Engineering Exosomes for Efficient Delivery of CRISPR-Cas9 for Targeting BCR-ABL in Philadelphia Chromosome (Ph) Positive Leukemia”).
This project aims to cure Philadelphia chromosome (Ph) leukemia by employing engineered stem cells autoloaded Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats/Cas9 (CRISPR-Cas9) gene editing system. Gene editing technology using CRISPR-Cas9 represents a new era of genome editing, improving the limitations of older methods that are inefficient and time-consuming. However, this technology is beleaguered by inefficient cellular delivery. A potential novel solution to circumvent this challenge is utilizing exosomes as delivery vehicles. Exosomes are cell-derived nanovesicles (30–200 nm) involved in the intercellular efficient transportation of biologically active materials. Hence, exosomes are considered the “ideal” delivery vehicles for small molecules or nucleic acids.
This is a grant funded contractual position.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the faculty, you will perform a varied set of responsibilities which include:
- conducting wet lab research at AKU-CRM laboratory
- conducting daily, weekly, and monthly inventory of consumables/reagents required for the team
- attending weekly meetings, journal clubs and research in progress and presenting in these meetings as directed by the assigned faculty
- compiling annual reports.
Requirements:
You should have:
- a bachelor’s degree in the field of Biological Science or related field of research
- experience in research laboratory is plus point, post qualification.
- candidates with experience in the following areas are encouraged to apply:
– Cell biology research (e.g., tissue culture, genetic engineering, flow cytometry)
– Molecular biology research (e.g., cloning, sequencing, PCR, real-time PCR, CRISPR-
Cas9)
– Exosomes isolation, characterization and engineering
– Biochemical techniques such as Western blotting, ELISA, IP/Co-IP and protein
purification
– Stem cell biology research
– Imaging techniques such as fluorescence microscopy, Confocal microscopy, flow cytometry
- In addition, candidates who are currently involved in the broad area of stem cell and molecular biology, as listed below, will also be considered:
– Hematology
– Cytogenetics and imaging
– Gene and molecular therapy
– Exosomes engineering and characterization
– Nanomedicine
- strong organizational skills with ability to handle multiple tasks assigned by the faculty
- competent in computer usage with command over Microsoft office, statistical and imaging software
- sound communication skills. Fluent in English speaking and writing.
