Senior Perfusionist
JOB DESCRIPTION
Perfusionist is a medical professional trained to assist a cardiac surgeon while performing complex cardiac surgeries. He is an integral part of a cardiac surgical team and his major responsibility is to keep the cardiac surgical patient alive while the surgeon is operating
RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervising and controlling the overall workflow of the department/section
Reviews patient’s medical history, consults with surgeon or physician, and obtains necessary information to set up heart-lung machine and related equipment.
Prepares and tests equipment to ensure proper functioning.
Conducts extracorporeal circulation for adult, pediatric and neonate patients and ensure the safe management of physiologic functions by monitoring, and if needed correcting, the necessary variables.

The Senior Perfusionist provides consultation to the physician in the selection of the appropriate equipment and techniques to be used during extracorporeal circulation.
During cardiopulmonary bypass, the Senior Perfusionist may administer blood products, anesthetic agents, or drugs through the extracorporeal circuit on prescription and/or appropriate department protocol.
Preparation & delivery of warm and cold retrograde & antigrade blood and crystalloid cardioplegia.
Responsible for the monitoring of blood gases and the adequate anticoagulation of the patient, induction of hypothermia, hemodilution, and other duties, when prescribed.
Takes corrective action when abnormal situations arise, and keeps surgeon and anaesthesiologist fully informed about patient’s condition at all times.
Manages and operates other specialized instrumentation and procedures:
– Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumping
– Autologous Blood Processing
– Lab Analysis Equipment
– Electronic Physiological Monitoring (CDI 500 in-line blood gas monitoring)
– Electronic Data Management
– Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
– Ventricular Assist Devices
– Respiratory Assist
– Ultrafiltration and hemoconcentration
– Activated Clotting Time (ACT)
– Thromboelastography (TEG)
Participates in a 24 hour Rota to cover routine and emergency procedures requiring perfusion services.
Participates in the teaching of trainees and in general educational activities in the hospital.
Participates in Quality Assurance programs and new product assessment.
May be administratively responsible for purchasing supplies and equipment, as well as for personnel and departmental management.
Final medical responsibility for extracorporeal perfusion rests with the surgeon in charge.
Managing departmental finances and budgets
Ensuring appropriate accountability and adherence to approved budgets
Analyzing monthly variance reports on budgets and authorizing all required expenditures and supplies are made in a timely manner in order to ensure smooth functioning of the department
Data Management
Overseeing day-to-day integrity of database and database procedures, which may include conducting weekly and monthly audits of data, to confirm use of accurate entry processes
Archiving of records with no activity for specified period by following the facilities retention policy and procedures and regulatory standards.
Monitoring and maintaining users’ security settings in HIS
Conducting frequent audits of electronic medical record using the application tools as per the instruction of HIM Manager / Senior Management to detect breach of confidentiality and patient privacy issues.
Handling Health Information
Directing, preparing and distributing health information (electronic and paper) to relevant departments within the facility while ensuring accuracy and timeliness of the same
Overseeing the retrieval and modification of patient information from the health information system while strictly adhering to patient privacy and confidentiality guidelines and accreditation and regulatory standards.
Coordinating with outsourced Coding services where required to ensure that all the patient encounters are coded and updated
Ensuring Development
Ensuring training and orientation to new staff and ensuring that employees adhere to the departmental and facility policies and procedures
Identifying any opportunities for staff training and development
Coordinating staff meetings to discuss the issues pertaining to the workflow of specific areas of responsibility
Maintaining process improvement activities and quality control measures
Monitoring the quality of work of the department/section and participating in department/sectional quality improvement initiatives
Investigating and resolving problems, complaints and incidents from internal and external customers and resolving the same
Improvising policies, processes and guidelines to initiate systemic changes for better functioning of the department
Participating actively in the clinical audits of the department
Particpiating actively in risk management initiatives and evaluating data management risks and taking preventive measures
Ensuring Accuracy
Monitoring the accuracy and quality of various data, reports and statistics produced by the Health Information department
Ensuring completeness and accuracy of data available within the sytem
Ensure completeness and accuracy of documentation
Ensuring good customer service in the department/section
Maintaining collaborative and effective relationships with other key management
personnel and keeping abreast of significant economic, social and technical trends, and regulatory guidelines, which may influence assigned functions/services and/or the facility
Providing and maintaining effective liaison and relationships with other department/sections, the clinical staff, patients, legal counsel, and other agencies that interface with the department/section
Maintaining the confidentiality of all health information and ensuring that the staff are aware of the need for confidentiality
Resolving problems that arise with releases of confidential medical information, misplaced patient records or any other client facing problem
Ensuring high quality of customer service, communicating and maintaining the performance expectations of clients
Identifying and recommending ways to improve client satisfaction within the department
Contributing to the team effort
Participating in cross-functional teams and committees as appropriate
Developing and maintaining positive and constructive work relationships with departmental and facility staff
Maintaining staffing, work schedules and time keeping records
Applying the policies of the facility in relation to attendance, annual leave and sick leave
Planning, allocating, checking and evaluating staff work through out the day
Listening to staff grievances and taking appropriate action
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications Required:
* BSC in a science subject plus a post graduate diploma/ certificate in Perfusion.
* AND Current national license, registration with the society of Perfusionist of
Great Britain and Ireland.
Or the European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusionion.
Experience Required in addition to the Qualifications mentioned above (Relevant to the Job) Required:
NLT 4 years experience as a Perfusionist with PEDIATRIC EXPERIENCE

Required: Proficiency in English language
