Introduction:

Aga Khan University (AKU), chartered in 1983 as Pakistan’s first private international university, is committed to the provision of education, research and health care of international standard, relevant to Pakistan and the region. In addition to the quaternary care hospital in Karachi, AKUH has a network of four off campus hospitals, over 30 medical centre and 300 Clinical Laboratories, and more than 30 pharmacies across 130 cities of Pakistan. It also offers Home Healthcare Services. The Hospital provides Zakat for those patients who are eligible, and the health system offers generous Patient Welfare to support those in financial need. 

The Aga Khan University Hospital Clinical Laboratories are the first in Pakistan to be accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), which is considered a gold standard in laboratory testing. The department consists of five sections namely Chemical Pathology, Haematology & Transfusion Medicine, Histopathology, Microbiology, and Molecular Pathology.

Director Clinical Laboratories

Responsibilities:

Director Clinical Laboratories will be responsible for providing administrative support to leadership for achieving strategic goals of Clinical Laboratories in line with vision and mission of the University.

Specific responsibilities include to:

  • Develop and implement integrated methods and systems for improving operational efficiency and plan future needs and growth to ensure availability of required resources
  • Develop strategies to ensure patient volume targets are accomplished with efficient financial planning
  • Conceptualize, develop, and manage sub-specialty and service development under the guidance of the Department’s Chair and COO
  • Prepare and monitor strategies for facilitating hospitals’ teams for future services & infrastructure development
  • Develop strategies that strengthen relationships with referring physicians in line with Institutional policies and ethics and expand corporate business
  • Ensure efficient flow of overall administrative function of the Clinical Laboratories operations at the main Stadium Road Campus and across the country and abroad while ensuring smooth function of STAT labs
  • Establish effective risk management framework in coordination with Internal Audit and Risk & Compliance Departments
  • Ensure effective and efficient implementation of Clinical Laboratories Quality Assurance Program and ensure periodic and effective oversight of implementation of quality management system and techniques to comply with CAP & JCIA recommended measures in the department
  • Identify staffing needs, prepare staffing plan, and support staff developmental initiatives and training programs to ensure continuous learning and development of staff
  • Serve as a role model; provide leadership and problem-solving support to peers, direct reports and to customers in a manner that facilitates the building of strong relationships
  • Lead aggressive and sustainable growth initiatives from conception to implementation and review performance to ensure realization of intended strategies and outcomes, resulting in exceptional performance and service standards worthy of a role model in emerging economies.

Requirements:

The successful candidate should have:

  • A formal Master’s degree in in Business Administration or equivalent from a reputable university
  • At least 10 years of relevant management or administrative work experience in reputable laboratories or healthcare industry or Clinical Laboratories
  • Ability to effectively prepare budgets, manage resources and monitor financial performance
  • A successful team player leading a diverse team to deliver set objectives
  • Possess attitude of thinking beyond the norms and creating environment to establish and sustain mix of services including medical, surgical, diagnostics and other services in the outreach program with full ownership of all services
  • Competency to establish performance management system & accountability
  • Proven leadership qualities with attitude of an entrepreneurship 
  • Ability to develop, maintain and strengthen partnership with stake holders across functions for the delivery of exemplary patient care services
  • Excellent command over technical and administrative aspects of clinical laboratory operations
  • Strong analytical skills to understand and solve complex problems, and ability to present with clarity to a wider audience
  • Ability to make difficult decisions in a timely manner; positive attitude and ready to accept change
  • Ability to cope-up with work pressure and meet stringent deadlines
  • Ability to handle large teams’ cross functional teams including sales force 
  • Willingness for national and international travel as per needs.
