Introduction:

Aga Khan University, chartered in 1983 as Pakistan’s first private international university, is committed to the provision of education, research and health care of international standard relevant to Pakistan and the region. The affiliated Aga Khan University Hospital has well-equipped investigative services and provides state-of-the-art clinical facilities.

The Department of Oncology offers comprehensive cancer care services to all patients. The services are provided through multidisciplinary teams. Infrastructure facilities include a daycare setting dedicated to oncology patients. Outpatient facilities include clinics of Medical, Haematology, Pediatric, Radiation, and Palliative Care. The Department has a strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate education and research. Residency programs are offered in Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, and Clinical Haematology Oncology, and a fellowship program in Pediatric Oncology.

Radiation Oncology facility was commissioned at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi in February 2006 and is based at the Ibn-e-Zuhr Building. This facility is equipped with four linear accelerators, a brachytherapy suit and a simulator. The cancer patients are treated at this facility with state-of-the-art equipment and treatment planning systems. Radiation Oncology at AKU offers:

3D conformal radiotherapy, Intensity modulated radiotherapy and Volumetric Arc therapy, Image guided radiation therapy, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Stereotactic radiation therapy, Intracavitary brachytherapy for gynaecologic cancers, PET/CT base radiation therapy planning, Total skin electron therapy (TSET), Total body irradiation (TBI) for bone marrow transplant conditioning, Radiation Oncology Section currently has five full time, site-specific faculty, six clinical medical physicists and fifteen radiation therapy technologists.

Assistant Professor / Senior Instructor (Radiation Oncology), Department of Oncology

Responsibilities:

You will be responsible to: 

  • demonstrate commitment to the highest ethical standards in patient care, research, and academic activities
  • provide clinical care to patients undergoing radiation therapy treatment, including treatment planning, delivery, and follow-up care with a special focus on care for gynaecological and breast cancer patient
  • participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss treatment plans for patients and collaborate with other specialists such as medical oncologists, surgeons, and radiologists
  • participate in and conduct peer review meetings in radiation oncology to foster the existing culture of quality and patient safety
  • engage in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and safety within the radiation oncology section
  • participate in academic activities such as journal clubs, case conferences, and tumor boards
  • contribute to the development of educational materials and curriculum in radiation oncology
  • develop and deliver lectures, seminars, and workshops on radiation oncology topics for medical students, residents, fellows, and other healthcare professionals
  • design, develop, and conduct high quality research in the discipline of radiation oncology with integration of modern treatment techniques with a strong focus on publications
  • supervise and oversee the training programs in radiation oncology, and mentor trainees, Fellows, and students
  • develop and implement advanced radiation treatment techniques through interdisciplinary education and collaborative learning
  • assist in assigned administrative activities
  • engage in professional development activities, including attending conferences, workshops, and continuing medical education courses
  • serve on departmental and institutional committees related to radiation oncology, medical education, and research
  • maintain licensure and certification in radiation oncology, as required by regulatory bodies.

Requirements:

You must have completed a structured postgraduate training program and possess FCPS, FRCR, American Boards or equivalent qualification and have at least two years of clinical experience after completion of training. In addition, you should have demonstrated scholarship through research, publications and/or contribution to education.

The applicant must have good interpersonal and communication skills, and effective analytical and decision-making abilities. Personal attributes such as initiative, problem-solving, and teamwork is highly valued.
