Job Summary
Based in Nairobi, Kenya, the Department of Population Health (DPH) is comprised of a highly skilled, multi-disciplinary team with expertise in medical, public health, social, demography, statistical and policy sciences with a vision to contribute to the health of populations, particularly those most in need, by using a population health science approach.
Responsibilities
The DPH Biostatistician/Data Scientist will be involved in providing technical expertise in research projects/studies conducted by Faculty, students and Residents in the Medical college, using various research designs including cohort, cross-sectional, randomized controlled, diagnostic accuracy and modelling studies. He/She will teach Biostatistics & Data Science courses in the under-graduate and post-graduate programmes in the Medical College. They will also be involved in writing research proposals and grant applications for submission to external bodies, primarily through providing advice on statistical and data science methodology. The successful candidate will also oversee data quality control during data collection for ongoing projects, analysis of data and preparing articles for publication. The individual will be expected to be on track towards developing an academic career in the application of biostatistics and data sciences in the field of health sciences. Specifically, the incumbent will
- Assist in calculating sample size and developing analysis & modelling plans for research as well as anlyzing and interpretation of data collected in research projects.
- be responsible for guiding and supervising Maters and PhD students on the thesis research writing.
- Assist in the designing, planning, implementation, assessment and reporting the Biostatistics and advanced courses according to the MSc Population Health Sciences curriculum.
- Develop biostatistics course content for the MMed and PhD in Health Science programmes and ensure course completion. Schedule and prepare project reports of epidemiological analyses for study teams and for scientific publications.
- Assist faculty and staff in research grant applications especially on the statistical and data sciences research design aspects and lead in writing of research proposals and grants applications for submission to donors.
- Support Faculty in planning and developing the statistical aspects of their research work and projects.
- Write papers and submit to international peer-reviewed journals for publication as well as support faculty and staff in data analysis and interpretation for their manuscripts.
Requirements:
- A PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics and/or Epidemiology with a strong quantitative bias or similar.
- BA and /or MSc in any of the above or closely related fields
- Minimum of 3- year experience as a statistician in health research.
- Experience in teaching undergraduate or graduate students at the University or mentorship of interns/ students in a research environment.
- Excellent knowledge and experience in data science methodologies and their applications.
- Good grasp of geospatial statistical and data sciences tools and method will be distinct advantage.
- Experience implementing research projects.
